Opening
Acrylic staple fiber is a synthetic fiber based on polyacrylonitrile, produced by copolymerising acrylonitrile with selected comonomers that influence dyeability and thermal behaviour. The polymer can be spun by either the dry route, where solvent is removed in a heated shaft, or the wet route, where the polymer coagulates in a bath. Dry spun acrylic commonly has a dog-bone-type cross-section and a soft, wool-like handle, while wet spun acrylic is typically round and can provide deep, even dye uptake.
Acrylic fiber is widely used where wool-like softness, warmth and colour appearance are desired together with resistance to moths, mildew and sunlight. Our range covers high bulk acrylic for knitwear and blankets, shrink-resistant acrylic for shape retention, modacrylic and flame-retardant grades for protective applications, and dope-dyed acrylic for automotive and outdoor uses where colour fastness is important. Acrylic-wool blending is also used to balance cost, hand and appearance.
Features & Material
Bulk is a defining feature of many acrylic grades. High bulk acrylic can be produced by combining fiber populations with different shrinkage potentials and then relaxing the blend in steam or hot water, allowing the shrinkable component to contract and develop three-dimensional crimp. The resulting loft and trapped-air structure support warmth at low weight. Shrink-resistant acrylic can be heat set to achieve a boiling-water shrinkage target of ≤3% for applications requiring dimensional stability.
Modacrylic grades use halogen-containing comonomers as part of the polymer structure, providing inherent flame-retardant behaviour rather than relying only on a topical finish. Depending on grade and test method, limiting oxygen index values can be in the 28–32 range. Dope-dyed acrylic incorporates pigment into the polymer before spinning and can provide high light fastness; grade 6–7 on ISO 105-B02 should be confirmed for the specific grade and lot. Acrylic for knitting is supplied in finer deniers with controlled crimp for worsted and woollen systems, while "Orlon" is a historical trade name associated with acrylic fibers.

FAQ
Q1. How close does acrylic come to real wool, and where does it fall short?
A: Acrylic wool fiber can approximate several wool-like properties, including warmth-to-weight, softness and colour brilliance, while generally offering better resistance to moths and mildew and good light resistance. Its moisture absorption and breathability are lower than wool, and pilling can be more noticeable in some low-twist knits. A wool blend can be used when a balance between cost, hand and performance is required.
Q2. How is high bulk achieved?
A: Two fiber streams with different shrinkage potentials can be blended and then relaxed in steam or hot water. The shrinkable stream contracts and promotes permanent three-dimensional crimp in the stable stream, trapping air and creating loft. A high bulk grade can be specified to a target bulking range such as 20–35%, subject to the agreed test method.
Q3. Why does modacrylic resist flame permanently?
A: The halogen-containing comonomer is incorporated into the polymer structure rather than applied only as a finish, so the flame-retardant behaviour is designed to be inherent to the fiber. Limiting oxygen index and actual flame performance should be confirmed by the applicable test method and grade specification before use in protective applications.
Q4. Do you supply acrylic for automotive interior use?
A: Yes, automotive grades can be supplied. Dope-dyed acrylic can be developed toward high light fastness, with grade 6–7 on ISO 105-B02 subject to confirmation for the specific grade and lot. Colour cards can be provided for approval, and automotive colour requirements can be evaluated against the customer's specified standard.
